Did You Know? Aquaplaning and Its Relation to Safe Driving

Heavy rain is ready to whack your trip anytime when entering the rainy season. The sub-optimal road drainage system and the difference in road contours cause puddles on the road surface covering road markings. In this condition, Aquaplaning often occurs in vehicles.

What is Aquaplaning?
Aquaplaning, also known as Hydroplaning, is a condition where the car tires float or don't touch the road surface due to the tires being unable to ward off puddles that are passed.

Did You Know? Aquaplaning and Its Relation to Safe Driving

In Aquaplaning conditions, when the car runs on a water surface, the car tires lose full traction on the asphalt which can cause slipping or skidding. This is also one of the many risks in driving during the rainy season.

What are the causes and how to handle them?
Aquaplaning or Hydroplaning occurs due to several factors as follows:

  • Driving too fast when the road surface is wet.
  • Lighter vehicle weight.
  • Condition of car tires that are not suitable for use (worn).
  • Inappropriate car tire tread design.
  • The composition of a deep enough puddle can sometimes make it easier for car tires to get this Aquaplaning symptom.

Then how to handle it if stuck in this Aquaplaning or Hydroplaning condition?
The most important thing we have to do is stay calm, and then can do the following instructions:

  • Don't hit the brake suddenly.
  • Reduce gas pedal pressure.
  • If you have to hit the brakes, do it slowly with a pumping motion (if your vehicle does not have ABS features).
