12 Tips to Overcome Motion Sickness

Holiday seasons, such as during Eid, tend to make people travel and go home. Not only using private vehicles, but various modes of transportation also become options for people to travel, such as planes, trains, ships, buses, minibusses, and so on. These various types of transportation pass through different types of terrain, and the terrain can be challenging to navigate. The type of terrain that is not easy can affect drivers and passengers when traveling through it. This condition and other factors, such as weather and endurance, can make you experience motion sickness.

Motion sickness can be experienced on land, sea, and air travel. According to Galuh Novi Wulandari, a doctor at the Prof. Dr. Soeroyo Mental Hospital in Magelang, motion sickness is often characterized by dizziness, nausea, and even vomiting. The occurrence of motion sickness can be quite disturbing. Several things can be done to overcome it so that you do not experience motion sickness. Here are some tips for you to overcome motion sickness.

1. Get Enough Rest Before Traveling

An unfit body can trigger motion sickness. To avoid motion sickness, get enough rest before your trip. Do not force an unfit body condition, but still travel.

2. Avoid Eating Too Much

Fill the stomach appropriately because excessive shocks on the trip can cause nausea and dizziness.

3. Front-Facing Seats

If you are not driving and are riding a land vehicle, try to sit in a seat that faces forward.

4. Focus on One Point Ahead

Focus on one point in front to change the view that causes dizziness and motion sickness. In addition to focusing on facing forward, look at one point that is not moving.

5. Set the Right Position

When you feel the symptoms of motion sickness, try to find the right position for your body. Some people feel more comfortable when upright, while others feel more comfortable when lying down.

6. Drink Water

To stay hydrated and help reduce nausea, drink water. To avoid creating excessive nausea, you can avoid drinks that contain caffeine and have too sweet flavors.

7. Eat Snacks

Consumption of snacks such as chips and other dry snacks can help reduce motion sickness.

8. Avoid Heavy Meals

In contrast to snacks, heavy foods such as fatty, sour, sweet, and overly salty foods can trigger nausea and make it worse.

9. Don't Read

Nausea and dizziness during motion sickness will get worse if you do reading activities. Either reading books or reading media on a cellphone should not be done.

10. Do Chatting Activities

Chatting with other passengers can help you feel better. Chatting can help you shift your focus from the uncomfortable feeling of motion sickness.

11. Provide Oils as Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy oils such as eucalyptus oil, lavender, lemon, cardamom, and so on can help you feel more comfortable and relieve nausea caused by motion sickness.

12. Take Anti-Travel Sickness Medication

Motion sickness medications are widely available in drug stores and pharmacies. Those of you with a history of motion sickness should be able to prepare and take medication before traveling.
