Did You Know? The Importance of Using A Safety Belt while Driving

In many accidents, being completely ejected from a vehicle is almost always deadly.

In general, the function of the safety belt is to protect and buckle up every passenger in the car during a crash or collision. So the body does not move suddenly or be ejected from the car in the event of an accident.

The function and benefits of using seat belt are as follows:

  1. Give A Comfort While Driving. Wearing a seat belt will certainly add to the comfort of driving because every driver will have more leverage in controlling the car. In the end the risk of accident will be minimized. What’s more, with today’s technology, seat belt is designed to maximize comfort when used.
  2. Holding The Body & Protect The Head from Impact. The main function of a seat belt is a tool to hold the body. The seat belt will keep the body upright so will be more focused while driving and concentration will not be easily dispersed. In the event of an accident, the risk of being thrown can be avoided. The seat belt is very useful in protecting the head from impact. Although in general its function is to protect body’s vital organs. Wearing a safety belt during an accident reduces the chance of serious injury or death by about half.
  3. The Airbag is Not A Substitute. Few people think that airbags are a substitute for seat belt. It is slightly wrong! Airbags are designed to complement seat belt. When you don't wear your seat belt, your body won't remain in a position that will allow the airbag to help prevent you from getting injured. Wearing a seat belt is a must to get the most out of the airbag.
  4. Obey The Rules. A part of the main function as a safety feature, the usage of a seat belt also reflects that you are a law-abiding person. Wearing seat belt is not only based on self-awareness, but also on order of law. The regulations of the obligation to use seat belt for drivers and passengers of vehicles are stated in Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation Article 106 paragraph 6. The article explains that:
    “Everyone who drives a motorized vehicle with four or more wheels and a passenger who sitting next to him must wear a seat belt.”

    Then in Article 289, it is explained about the consequences for drivers who do not wear seat belt while driving a car. The complete reading of the article is as follows:
    "Anyone who drives a Motorized Vehicle or a Passenger who sits next to the Driver who does not wear a safety belt as referred to in Article 106 paragraph (6) shall be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of 1 (one) month or a fine of up to IDR250,000.00 (two hundred fifty thousand rupiah)".
